Three Home-based Entrepreneurs
Share Success Stories on HBN Panel
September 2005
Panelists included Nancy
Black, owner of Organization Plus in Beverly; Elaine Barker,
owner of Paper Potpourri in Haverhill; and Roberta Shaw, owner
of ADDlantic Associates in Wenham.
Some of Nancy Black’s
comments were:
“You can make things happen
if you take the initiative.”
Success tip: “Be open to the
possibilities. It allows you to be flexible and enjoy what
you’re doing.” For example, Nancy is working with outside
consultants to develop a service that offers virtual organizing
online, and she’s creating an organizing model for people who
hold a specific position in a client company.
Nancy notes that at times you
may be serving clients or markets that aren’t necessarily your
main focus – but you can still use this as an educational
opportunity. A challenge for Nancy is defining what
differentiates her. “My strength is working with business,
whether home-based or more corporate. And I always have
organizing supplies with me when I meet with a client.”
The keys to success:
“Marketing, marketing, marketing. My strongest marketing tool is
my web site.” Emphasizing the importance of networking, Nancy
advises: “Be visible -- people need to know who you are.” Don’t
underestimate the power of perseverance and determination. As
Vidal Sassoon points out, “The only place that success comes
before work is in the dictionary.”
“Believe in yourself, and
other people will believe in you too,” says Nancy.
