The ART of Planning Your Time for
Business Owners, Executives & Managers

According to Wikipedia…

“Time management is the act or process of planning and exercising conscious control over the amount of time spent on specific activities, especially to increase effectiveness, efficiency or productivity.”

Good time management makes life go more smoothly. Poor time management creates anxiety and stress. As a Professional Organizer with more than 30 years of experience, I can clearly see why people often suffer from the “Terrible Toos” – too much to do, too little time to do it in.

Here are the most common causes of the Terrible Toos:

* Being “over-programmed” at work
* Always being interrupted
* Being disorganized
* Unrealistic expectations
* Solving problems at work that others should be solving
* Always saying “yes” (never saying “no”)
* Failure to delegate

Can you relate to some of the items in this list? One way to deal with the Terrible Toos is with more effective TIME PLANNING. This is something I have been helping more and more of my clients with. Yes, it is important to be organized and have systems and work flows, but all of that doesn’t help much if you are not effectively planning your time.

The “A.R.T. of Planning Your Time”

Many business owners get to work early and the next thing they know it is 5:30pm and the day is gone. They end up staying late in the office to “catch up,” maybe even work weekends, or take work home. They don’t see the small little things that keep adding up and “steal” their time on a daily basis.

One business owner I recently spoke with gave me a list of ALL the things she did at work one day. I asked her: “Are any of these things really your most important goals and priorities?” There was a long silence and she said “No, they aren’t.” Part of time planning requires you to be very clear about your goals and priorities.

So much information is thrown at us every day. Email, regular mail, phone calls, memos, meetings, reports, accounting – the list goes on and on! All of these things usually end up becoming TASKS that need to be managed and completed. Organizing all this information and then prioritizing it and scheduling it into your calendar is critical to your success (and to managing the Terrible Toos).
